Defending the Freedom that Defines America

DEFENDING RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Celebrating 250 Years of
Our First Freedom

As our nation marks 250 years, we remember the freedom that defines America. In 1776, the Declaration of Independence established that our rights come from our Creator, not from government.

That principle shaped the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty, establishing it as America’s first freedom.

Religious liberty protects our ability live out our faith and to speak our convictions without fear. Without it, all other rights become fragile- without it, all other rights will begin to disappear.

Religious Freedom In the Next 250 Years is Not Guaranteed

Religious liberty is being challenged across the country. A teacher forced to take down her crucifix, a store manager fired for refusing to use preferred pronouns, service members dishonorably discharged for not taking the Covid vaccine, and elementary-aged children required to push radical transgender ideology are all examples of everyday Americans forced to choose between their work and their faith.

These are just a few among thousands of stories of clients who have chosen to stand up and fight for their rights.

First Liberty Institute is the largest legal organization in the nation dedicated exclusively to defending religious liberty for all Americans. We believe that every American of any faith—or no faith at all—has the fundamental right to follow their conscience and live according to their beliefs.

If we fail to defend the first freedom, the foundation that sustains every other right weakens.

Ensuring Faith Remains Free

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we remember the foundational freedom that made our nation possible: religious liberty.

For 250 years, it has shaped who we are. And it must be secured for the next 250—which is why First Liberty continues to defend religious freedom for all Americans.

As the nation’s largest non-profit religious liberty law firm, First Liberty has spent nearly 30 years fighting in courtrooms and in our culture. We ensure Americans can keep their right to live out their faith- in classrooms, the military, houses of worship, and communities across the country. And our clients never pay a dime.

As America marks her 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, this moment is more than a milestone—it’s a turning point to ensure faith remains free.

And, our clients never see a bill from us.

A Narrow Window. A Generational Responsibility.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, we stand at a rare moment in history.

The President’s Religious Liberty Commission– the first of its kind- is preparing recommendations to strengthen constitutional protections. Recent Supreme Court decisions have reaffirmed key religious liberty principles.

Governing windows do not last forever. With national elections on the horizon and shifting political dynamics always in play, the opportunity to secure lasting protections for religious liberty is limited.

The 250th anniversary is not only a celebration of what was declared in 1776. It is a moment to secure what will define the next 250 years.

Will you join us in celebrating and supporting the Religious Liberty Commission?
